Square foot gardening.

14:08

In my previous post I did state that I was only growing a few fruit & veg this year. This however has kind of gone out the window. I have been researching a lot about square foot gardening - which is ideal for small spaces and allowing you to grow a variety. After some careful thought and consideration I decided to go all in and test out a 4ft x 2ft raised bed.

The raised bed will allow me to divide the area into 8 sections (1ftx1ft). I have decided to grow the following:

  • Spring onions
  • mixed leaf salad leaves
  • Marigolds x2
  • 1 cucumber plant
  • Spinach
  • Carrots
  • Onions
  • Lettuce

I used this website which allows you to design your own bed and arrange it online - it also has some helpful tips regarding each plant, and how many for each division.

I decided I am going to use a mixed compost made up of 3 types - Farmyard Manure, Multi-purpose compost and top soil. This seemed to be a good choice after exploring online and also speaking to some other gardeners.

Originally I was going to put my butternut squash and courgette plants in the back rows. I decided against this as I think they are going to take up a large amount of space - so I will be putting each into a large container.

All my seedlings have started growing! I have 2 of each which include, butternut squash, Mini bell peppers, hot chilli peppers, red robin tomatoes and hopefully courgettes!

I had a very strange situation with one of the courgette seeds. It started to shoot - however it was rooting in what I could only make out as upside down. I read online it will sort itself out, I did repot it like the other seedlings in the hope it would continue to grow and would shoot some leaves.

Hopefully the raised bed and compost will arrive in time before I go away for a few days! If not I may have a lot of redeliveries to make when I get back.
